Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women

Zambia was examined by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women - at its 49th session, 11 - 29 July 2011, in New York.

Committee Against Torture

Zambia was examined by the UN Committee Against Torture (CAT) - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment - at its 42nd session, 28 April-16 May 2008.

Human Rights Committee (civil and political rights)

Zambia was examined by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child - at its 33rd session, in May 2003.


Special Procedures

The UN Independent Expert on human rights and extreme poverty, Magdalena Sepulveda, visited Zambia on 20-28 August 2009. The purpose of the visit was to collect firsthand information on the situation of people living in extreme poverty from a variety of stakeholders in the country: State institutions, UN agencies, civil society 0rganisations. The Independent Expert organised her visit around the analysis of some key social policies, in particular those related to social protection. She paid particular attention to the situation of women, children, persons with disabilities and the impact of discrimination.
