Committee Against Torture

Peru will be examined by the UN Committee Against Torture (CAT) - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment - at its 49th session, 29 October - 23 November 2012.

Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

Peru will be examined by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights - at its 48th session, 30 April - 18 May 2012 in Geneva.

NGOs - including churches and related organizations - can submit written information in the form of a "parallel" report concerning the status of implementation of economic, social and cultural rights in Peru. NGOs should deliver 25 copies of their report and summary to the secretariat a week prior to the session for distribution to Committee members. Where possible, it is useful to submit a summary of the report in all the working languages of the Committee. Communication regarding submissions to the Committee may be addressed to gro.rhcho|rcsec#gro.rhcho|rcsec.

Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Peru was examined by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination - which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination - at its 75th session, 3-28 August 2009 in Geneva.


Special Procedures

The UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary forms of slavery, Ms. Gulnara Shahinian, is visiting Peru from 9 to 20 May 2011.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people while countering terrorism visited Peru from 1 to 8 September 2010.

The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, Mr. James Anaya, issued a press statement congratulating the Government of Peru for its adoption of the "Law on the right to previous consultation of indigenous and tribal peoples as defined by the ILO Convention 169 concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries".
